I just finished reading this crazily famous children story yesterday.
I was wondering why the story is so famous. Why my friends talked about it many times. Why Korea even made Le Petite France area where you can find Saint-Exupery’s miraculous character everywhere in and out of the Frenchly-designed houses and buildings.
I think I understand after I read the English-translated book.
The book tells a story about a pilot whose plane was broken and he lands at a desert. When he tries to fix his plane engine, this extraordinary little fellow stands before him asks,
“Please, draw me a sheep”.
The Little Prince brings the pilot to his innocence when he was a six-year-old boy by asking the pilot to draw him a sheep to save the Prince’s little planet from Baobabs trees.
The Little Prince, found the pilot, came from a very far away little planet with three little volcanoes and a rose. His planet is so little that he can see sunset as many as he wants by only moving his chair. In his planet the Baobabs roots grow and he must take them off regularly; because if not the Baobabs trees can destroy his planet. He also starts to mistrust his one and only red rose in his planet because the rose tells him lies so often. But not because the rose is bad, but because she wants to impress him. But only when he is about to escape from his planet that she says,
“Of course I love you,” the flower told him. “It was my fault you never knew…”.
During his journey to find friends, the Little Prince meets lots of fellows in different planet from a king, a businessman, a geographer, until he falls down to the Earth and meets the pilot. During his journey, he learns from everyone he meets and they learn from him.
The Little Prince is a character everyone will easily fall in love with.
There are some of the Little Prince’s words that I really like.
The story is simple and very well-written. It is cute and funny in some parts, yet has meaningful messages. I think ‘The Little Prince’ is a book every child should read.
“I know a planet inhibited by a red-faced gentleman. He’s never smelled a flower. He’s never looked at a star. He’s never loved anyone. He’s never done anything except add up numbers. And all day long he says over and over, just like you, ‘I’m a serious man! I’m a serious man!’ And that puffs him up with pride. But he’s not a man at all – he’s a mushroom!” – the Little Prince
“One must command from each what each can perform,… Authority is based first of all upon reason.” – the king in the first planet
“I admire you. But what is there about my admiration that interests you so much?” – the Little Prince to the very vain man in the second planet.
“I thought I was rich because I had just one flower, and all I own is an ordinary rose. That and my three volcanoes, which come up to my knee, one of which may be permanently extinct. It doesn’t make me much of a prince…” – the Little Prince in the planet Earth.
“For me you’re only a little boy just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you have no need of me, either. For you, I’m only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, we’ll need each other. You’ll be the only boy in the world for me. I’ll be the only fox in the world for you… “ – the fox in the planet Earth.
